Button Tops!

The table is the rink. The buttons want to dance. Pinch, twist, let go. A good spin stands up, hums, and takes its time falling. The round belongs to the last one still turning.

The spin card

Court โ€” a smooth table, a cookie sheet, or a hardcover book. Glossy is a gift.

Tops โ€” buttons with a little weight. Bigger ones stay up longer. Mix colors so each spinner has a set.

Stem โ€” optional: a toothpick or matchstick through two holes, like an axle. Instant top. Or spin the button on its edge, fingers only.

Write names down the side of a napkin. That napkin is the spin card.

How a button becomes a top

Hold it like a tiny coin, edges to the table. A quick twist between thumb and finger โ€” same motion as winding a music box. Let it go while it is still eager. Watch the wobble become a hum.

The axle way: slide a toothpick through a pair of holes, leave a little stick below as a foot, twirl the stick, set it down. It looks like a circus.

The heats

Last hum โ€” everyone spins at the same time. Last button still turning gets the round.

Distance waltz โ€” spin from a tape start. Farthest still-up top when it settles.

Color clock โ€” call a color, only that button may spin. Best of three.

Play to five rounds, or play until the spin card is a little constellation of tally marks.

Tiny twists

Duet โ€” two buttons at once, one in each hand. Both have to hum.

Plate rink โ€” spin inside a dinner plate. The rim keeps the show on stage.

Slow-mo โ€” the winner is the top that takes the longest from launch to rest. Someone counts out loud.

Tape the champion color on the fridge if the gazette still has room.
